Abstract

Becoming a Nurse has been my Passion since High School.

Some people battle with their future goals. However, I knew

what I wanted to achieve and pursued it one hundred and

ten percent. In this paper, it gives an overall view of my

Nursing Philosophy. It explains my nursing theory and how

leadership plays an important role in Nursing. Furthermore

how effective communication is in the work place. Nursing

is not just a career to me but an Art that helps sick individuals.

This philosophy helps me understand my role and duty to

the community as I open up about my thoughts of nursing.

This paper is covered with guidelines and questions. These

answered questions helped create my Nursing Philosophy.

Nursing yes it can be challenging but I think it’s a rewarding job.

What is Nursing? According to Coral & Coral (2001) Nursing can

be summarized as a significant, therapeutic, interpersonal

process that functions cooperatively with others to make

health possible with better outcomes.  Why is Nursing very

important to me? It’s not only helping others, it’s the working

relationship that develops. For instance, like a ship needing a

captain. Nursing is that direction the patients’ needs to create

a better and healthy outcome. What does a nurse brings to

society? Caring is the center of nursing, caring promotes

growth (Coral & Coral, 2001). In my beliefs, a nurse should

always perform the comprehensive art of nursing with the

each ethical principle in mind. As a nurse, the community

expects care to be carried out with high standards and respect.

The patient should never have to question your ability to work.

What makes a great nurse? Nursing is not just giving

medications anymore. A good nurse should embody all

the right qualities and approach.  A good nurse should always

put the patient first. A good nurse should always be

compassionate, have sympathy and empathy just to name

a few (Potter & Perry, 2010). A Nurse should always evaluate

themselves. According to Potter and Perry (2010) Nursing

values essential for Nursing are Human dignity, integrity

autonomy, altruism and social Justice. What qualities and

skills are important for Nurses?  Nurses actions and skills should

be deliberative rather than automatic as Potter and Perry

pointed out (2010). Treating every patient with dignity

regardless of the diagnoses and outcomes is very important.

A Nursing quality should always include “Caring”.

Caring can be demonstrated and practiced (2001). Nursing qualities should

include leadership/teaching skills. Nurses and patient create a

trusting relationship. This relationship should be genuine and

help the patient express and open up about health issues. What

Theory is important to me in Nursing? I believe in the theory of

Dorothea Orem self-model theory. To summarize it patient

Independence is the core of this theory. Self- care comprises

of these activities performed independently by an individual to

to promote and maintain person well-being (Meleis, 2011).

According to Meleis, (2011) The nurse then meets the self-care

by actions or doing for: by guiding, teaching, supporting or

providing the environment to promote patient’s ability.

What mistakes should a Nurse never make? The Nursing field

can be very challenging. In addition, we all know no one is

perfect. However, in nursing our skills and work has to be
close to perfection. We are leading and guiding people lives.

A nurse should never make the wrong assessment. A nurse

should never impose intentional tots. A nurse always uses the

ethical principles as guidelines in the day to day care of our

patients. If these guidelines are followed, the breech of care

will never be any less than anticipated.

It’s true Nursing is centered care. However, there are many

other job description that comes with the title. Meleis, (2011)

made a point the title “Nurse” can be many roles. It takes on a

of role of leadership, advocator, communicator, motivator,

confidant, to name a few. As I continue my journey through this

BSN path, I hope to become better at all the roles a nurse

should take on. As I reflect on this transition course I’ve learned

effective leadership and communication is always needed for

continuity of care. Furthermore, for collaboration with other

healthcare professionals. The Case study taught me always be

be an effective advocate. Also, document, that’s the written

proof that service was carried out.  Dealing with different

personalities at the work place, what is the effective approach?

This course also, gave me an insight of my own personality.

In addition, the Pros and cons on my personality type.  In

closing the answered questions put them together is my

Nursing philosophy. I hope to carry this beliefs with me

throughout my nursing journey. A wish man once told me

“good isn’t good enough if it can be better” and “better isn’t

better enough if it can be your best”. I’m close with this Nursing

belief “always be the best Nurse you can be”.
